Active Directory will not run or install if you do not have a DNS running on a Windows 2000 server. Make sure you firstly have DNS installed on a Win2k server and make sure the SRV records have been registerd in your forward lookup zone.

I have done this recently and used the same name space as we have registered with our Website and not had any problems so far and our website is hosted a by a third party
I would go for a single domain much easier to manage and have different OU's for each company and deligate control for each company to the local admins on each site. I agree with setting up different times for replication just make sure you have a DNS server and AD controller on each remote site...
