Taking apart a Maxtor external HD

Already tried it. I've followed the whole thing all the way around with a screwdriver. There's nothing. I imagine the manufacturer has a secret way in but I haven't found it yet.

    Hard drive serial number

I may have overcomplicated my answer. Open a command prompt and type dir. Like so... C:\Documents and Settings\seismo>dir Volume in drive C is c_drive Volume Serial Number is 44B7-5F13 Directory of C:\Documents and Settings\seismo 05/18/2007 01:28 PM <DIR> . 05/18/2007 01:28...

    External Hard Drive recommendation

I don't think you can go wrong with Seagate. Fry's usually has some good deals on Seagate external drives. A couple months ago I bought a 160GB for $50. I just bought a 250GB Maxtor external for $50 (just couldn't resist the deal) but I trust Seagate more than Maxtor (I know, I know, Seagate...

    Hard drive serial number

I believe you can boot up off of a dos disk and run fdisk and it'll show you the serial number (fdisk doesn't appear to be installed with XP). I remember back in my younger days, I had software that was tied to the serial number (for anti-piracy purposes) so I found a utility that would change...

Taking apart a Maxtor external HD

It's not that hard. Weaknees is for people not willing to get their hands dirty. I've already transplanted a new 250GB seagate drive into the Tivo - but it's a waste of space. (and I have no problem with Linux commands - I use it every day). Still, for $50 for the 250G Seagate(on sale at...

Taking apart a Maxtor external HD

My Tivo hard drive is dying a slow, painful death so I'm going to cannibalize my Maxtor 3200 external drive and replace the Tivo drive with it. I can't get the dang case open, though. There are no external screws and none of those little gaps in the housing where you can press a clip in to...

Speedstream 4200 on Windstream.net, no config

I just disabled telnet on Linux and started VNC on port 23 and I'm now able to connect to VNC over the internet. There must be something about routing those higher port numbers.

Speedstream 4200 on Windstream.net, no config

I finally got port forwarding working on mine...to an extent. According to the 4200 docs, the modem is already in bridge mode. allteltec - I tried following your instructions but I lost all internet access afterwards and had to restore default settings. Anyway, I think my biggest problem was...

Speedstream 4200 on Windstream.net, no config

I don't want to hijack this thread but I have the same modem on Windstream and I haven't been able to get port forwarding working at all. I've disabled the firewall on the modem, forwarded port 23 to my Linux box, as well as 5901 for VNC but I just cannot connect to my server from the internet...
