Yes, 100% defragged would be great! (I think I'm OCD in this regard!) I just think the pc would work better if it was completely defragged. I don't understand why the backup cabs files are not defragged.
Every once in a while my system will not work as it should - i.e., I connect to the...
smah - Thanks for your reply. I tried it (D/L & ran it) - the log said Drives C & D were defragged successfully. So I went back to My Computer/Management to check the defragged status. It still had a lot of fragments so I am not so sure the .vbs file worked so well. Shouldn't it have shown...
Hi, I have had XP on my system for over a year and love it. However, I have not been able to get a clean defrag since installation. The last defrag report is as follows:
Volume (C:)
Volume size = 14.91 GB
Cluster size = 8 KB...
If I'm not mistaken, HAWK works with Microsoft Outlook, not Outlook express. I just uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee VirusScan Professional 6.0 and ALL my emails have disappeared. Outlook Express won't work, so be careful!
Well, as usual, whenever I dig into one thing I find more problems! I did chat with a McAfee techie and I did uninstall McAfee, however, after reinstalling it, I found that ALL my email messages had disappeared. I have Outlook Express 6. I did not delete them and have checked and re-checked...
Wait another year after defragging? Really? I thought a pc should be defragged at least 1 or 2 times a month. I have a ton of stuff on my pc that is used extensively. Lots of pictures, music, and apps.
What do you mean "Anything below 5% fragmented is okay." Do you have XP?
XP...
Thanks AVChap, but I have already tried it - didn't work. Also, I read posts back to the beginning of the year looking for this problem - didn't find anything that matched.
That's why I thought I should uninstall it, run defrag, and then reinstall and see if it works that way. I heard it's...
I have Windows XP home edition and cannot defrag my system successfully. After defraging I get the following message in the report stating the following files could not be defragmented:
11 2.00 GB \Program Files\McAfee\McAfee
Shared Components\Safe &...
Well, it's fixed! After all your hard work (and mine) it all came down to selecting the "Load Startup Defaults" in the BIOS section. UGH! At least that's what I think happened. Thank you all for your help.

Well, cdogg, I tried deleting the Secondary IDE Controller from Device Manager list - rebooted, no luck. Still no CDRom or Zip drive. I looked at the 2ndry controller properties and on Drive 0 is lists Auto-Detect/None - I tried both and neither made a difference. Guess I will go shopping...
Thanks for all the info, Dan. I have visited the Compaq site many times. I even tried to update my BIOS and ended up with a major system crash - so I don't even want to try that again. Compaq sent out new hard drive, motherboard, modem. They said my HD was bad. Well when the new one was...
What about this? Can I go to Device Manager => IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS -> Secondary IDE Controller and DELETE the Secondary controller and reboot - will the system "find" it like it would a modem?
IRQ - 14 for Primary & 15 for Secondary

cdogg, thanks for the input. Yes I have checked device manager, nothing connected to the 2nd IDE controller is recognized, even tho they are shown in the BIOS, manually selected. I have tried the CDROM by it self as well as the ZIP by itself, neither worked. I also purchased a new cable. As...
Thanks for the tip - unfortunately it didn't work. My BiOS settings show the CD-ROM as the Secondary Master and my Zip drive (user settings) as Secondary Slave. I don't see anything that would suggest it is disabled.
I saw a tip in another question regarding Compaq using the Cable Select...
I encountered my problem after installing Windows XP, which I really like (after getting most of the "compatibility" problems worked out). My pc does not recognize my CD & Zip Drive. System is as follows:
Compaq Presario 5868
AMD K-7 Processor
256 Ram
20 GB HD
DVD
CD-ROM
Internal...
