    Pathping

Yes but how can the sending host differentiate between a ping packet being: 1. Dropped by the outbound interface of the sending router. 2. Corrupted on the dirty wan circuit. 3. Dropped by the inbound interface of the receiving router. All three would by shown by traceroute to be dropped in...

    Pathping

Yes but how does it know TTL timeout was due to being dropped on the link or by the router?

    Pathping

Does anyone know how the pathping command distinguishes between a packet lost on a link or packet lost by the next hop router?

Can Cisco VPN client browse internet through VPN tunnel?

Hello All, I have a PIX firewall configured to allow Cisco VPN clients to connect. The problem is when the VPN client has a tunnel established it cannot ping, telnet or connect to any sites on the internet. Also DNS lookups to an internet DNS server are not replying. Is the PIX configured to...

PIX firewalls interfere with BGP multihoming!?!

Lets say you have a primary site and DR site, each with a connection to a different ISP. Each site has a PIX firewall between the border router and internal network. I have read that it is extremely difficult (if not impossible) to force all traffic in a multihomed setup to come in and out of...

    Looks good - thanks!

Best book on BGP multihoming to ISP?

Hello all, I have yet to find a book that clearly explains how to set up multihomed ISP connections with two different routers going to two different ISPs. Almost every book I've seen just gives you a laundry list of BGP attributes with a dictionary definition of each, without ever applying...

    Missing NTOSKRNL.EXE

Thanks for the replies everyone. I found a quick and painless solution. By creating a boot floppy using XP boot files! Creating a boot floppy using NT boot files did not work probably because of the 7.8 gig limitation. The XP files did work probably because it has no such limitation. Once I...

    Missing NTOSKRNL.EXE

Hello All, I have an NT 4.0 workstation. Installed the latest critical updates and after a reboot I get the Missing NTOSKRNL.EXE error. I don't have an Emergency Repair Disk. I have one NTFS partition. Does anyone know how I can replace the corrupted NTOSKRNL.EXE without doing a parallel...

Do keepalives / heartbeats use same TCP sequence numbers?

Hi Robert, these are ACK frames with the same sequence number repeated over and over. So I guess sniffer considers these retransmissions? Thanks for your reply!

Does PIX alter TCP sequence numbers?

    Thanks much for the reply!

Do keepalives / heartbeats use same TCP sequence numbers?

Sorry, let me rephrase. Each server is getting the other servers' packets. I know this by placing a separate sniffer on each server's port and seeing the packets being sent and aknowledged at each end. It is ServerA that is always doing the retransmitting and ServerB always aknowledging. Here is...

Do keepalives / heartbeats use same TCP sequence numbers?

Thanks Jason for the fast reply. When I type netstat -s to show the TCP statistics on that Windows 2000 server, it shows the Segments Retransmitted counter incrementing by hundreds every minute. Do you think this number would increment from the keepalives being sent?

Do keepalives / heartbeats use same TCP sequence numbers?

Hello all, I am analyzing sessions between two servers for which the sniffer is showing hundreds of Non-Responsive Station and Too Many Retransmissions alerts. When I filter on any one of these TCP sessions, I see the retransmissions occur at constant intervals of 5.107 seconds even though all...

Does PIX alter TCP sequence numbers?

Hello all, I am trying to sniff a session between a server on an "inside" segement and a server on a "DMZ" segment. The server on the inside is being NAT translated to the same address on the DMZ like so: static (inside,DMZ) 10.1.1.1 10.1.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0...

So how does LMI make it globally significant? Thanks, Nick

Using connected interface in a ip route statement?

I noticed some people like to use the connected interface in a route statement as opposed to the address of the next hop router i.e.: ip route 1.1.1.0 255.255.255.0 Serial0/0 How does this even work? To whom is the packet addressed? How does it know how to reach the next hop router? Thanks, Nick

Are DLCI's locally or globally significant???

Hello all! I was doing some reading on DLCI's and came across the following statement (I've seen it elsewhere also): DLCI...In the basic Frame Relay specification, DLCIs are 'locally significant' (connected devices might use different values to specify the same connection). In the LMI extended...
