I've seen the same thing on XP and floppy disks. Yea, I know... Who still uses floppys.
Same message, same problem, just not on a network drive. I just don't see how setting OpLocks on the server would help.
Do you have DA's and a Scope configured? How is SLP configured?
The other thing to try is in client Properties, Client tab, use the IP address of the server in the Preferred Server field instead of the name.
