spoke too soon- the spooled patch plus the registry entry haven't completely protected me. I guess I'll need Microsoft's paid for patch for the registry entry to work fully

I've used NTBACKUP for online backusp for going on 5 years and it has restored successfully several times. be sure to check you logs regularly to make sure you're getting the /IS and /DS backed up. I run this cmd line for my backup (exchange 5.5 on 2000 server)

We have exchange 5.5 sp 4 and several patches on top. I've solved this problem a few times by removing office 2000 & outlook, rebooting, and reinstalling- then patching from windowsupdate.com
these defrag commands have been noted in various postings as risky for years; I'd definately do them offline. We have standard edition exchange 5.5 and we need to keep under 16 GB because of that. Offline defragging lets us know how far we really are from that hard limit- which crashes...
Gentlemen- I too came back from the holidays to find bunches of 7031 errors crashing my IMS on my exchange 5.5 server. I'd been googling every couple of days looking for anything on this and the advice from Yesti seems to have kept this event away for about 15 hours so far. Thanks so much.
