Wahoo, red x's gone (for now). I've got IE 6 with Windows 98SE. I just "repaired IE" (using Add/remove program) and I'm not getting red x's. It was this step that seemed to help:

i was getting red x's alot, using IE 6.0.28, with Windows 98 SE. I tried a bunch of the solutions in this long thread, but what (finally) just worked for me was installing the latest Java virtual machine. 1.4.2_03 is the version, i believe. and voila, finally, no red x's.....
