I don't think i'm using Nis, but how to be sure (the server
has no ethernet connection).
I've ever edit the /etc/shadow to empty values without result, i mean after reboot, values are still there.

Anyway, if you can reboot a computer (Solaris, Linux...), you can have an access to it's filesystem (if it's not encrypted). There is no real solutions against physical attack :)
