Dead Floppy
I hate to bear bad news, but it sounds like a bad controller. If the machine has USB ports, you could invest in a USB floppy drive. That would at least extend the usable life of the machine. Here is a link for price on one...- madjuice

A question about partitioning
The ability to run your programs from the other drive will depend on what they are. Programs such as Office 2000 or Office XP would probably not work since they have a lot of dependancies tied into the drive which they are installed on. Hard drive or Windows XP problem???
You may want to check your cpu cooling fan and any other fans you have in the system. If my cpu temp goes above a certain level the system does an automatic shutdown. While my computer does not reboot if that happens, some systems do. Even if that's not the problem, cleaning the dust bunnies...- madjuice
