I have no other HP laptop to try the drives to see whether the orignal still 'works'.
If it is the MB at fault is it worth fixing, using an external drive or buying a new laptop?
I gave up. I reset the laptop back to its original factory settings using the backup on the D: drive. Not longer using Windows 7 but Windows Vista Home.
and guess what?
I still cannot see the DVD drive! In the BIOS, in the device manager, in the disk manager or anywhere else on the laptop...
Ok. When I removed the old DVD drive and added the new on e the laptop said I would need to restore to proceed. I chose not to restore. I then booted as normal with old DVD drive then physically removed it and tried to 'add new hardware' the laptop does not automatically find any new hardware...
kjv1611,
I have purchased a new DVD drive for the laptop. Strangely when I added the new drive to the laptop and booted the laptop detected new hardware and suggested I restore the laptop to factory settings. Not a good idea as I have several GB of data on the laptop.
I am still open to...
Nelviticus - I have shown all hidden devices and the DVD drive is not shown.
Biglebowski - I am updating the Windows 7 software (only 1 outstanding update) and will get back to you.
Freestone - The DVD drive is not showing anywhere in the laptop. I have check the disk management tool and the...
Update:
I thought I'd take the 'experts' advice and replace the 'faulty' DVD drive with a new one.
Low and behold no difference. The laptop still does not recognise the drive in any way shape or form.
Can anyone help?
which to me means it is not shown in the device manager nor has a drive letter.
Whilst some comments may or may not have been helpful, the manner in which they are given portrays a somewhat flippant attitude. This seems strange as I would have thought some debugging or request of the laptops...
Sorry I thought this was a forum for help and assistance and not a forum for smart obvious statements.
I was asked
Which I tried, hence my comment. I also upgraded the BIOS via the HP website.
Prior to just going out and buying a new DVD drive or new laptop, I thought I'd ask in this type of...
Hi biglebowski,
Thank you for your comment. Everyone else seems to think it is a simple case of the DVD drive being 'dead'. I'm thinking the coincidence with windows 7 being installed is too great for it not to be a firmware/software issue.
In setup, I set the option to boot from CD/DVD drive. Placed a bootable CD in the drive and restarted the PC. The machine booted from the hard drive (as normal).
What other advice do you have?
Taking the responses one by one:
BadBigBen, I've tried the link to update the registry etc. No joy. I uninstalled iTunes to no avail. Will try to disable re-enable the drive in the BIOS shortly.
wolluf, please define "dead"? If dead means that the machine does not recognise it then yes it is...
Thanks I've tried that and nothing happened.
I set the bootable option to CD/DVD, placed a bootable disc in and the machine booted as normal.
What can I try now? (whilst you are replying I am looking at the HP site for any possible driver downloads).
PS The laptop is a HP Pavillion Dv6500
I will try to find out the information required later today.
In the mean time I have purchased a 1TB network hard drive as an alternative solution. This way I can backup 'everything' in case my XP desktop does die, plus all other machines on the network can truly share the data rather than have...
I recently upgraded my 3 year old HP laptop from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Ultimate.
Subsequently to this upgrade the laptop no longer recognises the CD/DVD drive. I've ene removed said drive, started, shut down and restarted laptop, added drive and it still does not recognise it.
Can anyone...
Thank you both for your input. My PC has two bays (already in use) I have an 80GB 'C' drive and a partioned 250GB second drive.
Yes its old, but its like an old friend with software I'm happy with (no I wont go into the long list), plus email accounts where I've forgotten the passwords for etc...
Good advice. I want to keep 'all' of my music, photos and documents on one drive rather than several external drives. I dont want to go the server route just yet.
If I did get two 500gb drives I'd have to replace the existing 'C' drive with a new one - which I dont particularly fancy...
Can replace my existing 200GB hard drive on a 2004 Desktop PC with a 1TB hard drive?
If so what will I need to upgrade said PC (apart from the new hard drive)?
I am currently running Windows XP with 1GB of RAM and a 1.83ghz processor.
Thanks
And that folks, is it.
I now have my two documents working as I planned.
Thanks for your assistance........................
Until my next project.......
