You are pretty much stuck with the problem. There is a Hot Fix for ODMA Problems in the Corel Knowledgebase that can minimize the problem but you'll still get the freezes. Sorry!!!
There is a compatibility issue with the combination of WordPerfect 9/Windows XP/DOCSOpen 3.9X. It does not happens if the Workstation is Windows 2000 Pro or if the WordPerfect is version 11 or 12.
Check the ODMA32 entry on the registry on the workstations. If GroupWise is first, you have to remove the entry or put the DOCSOpen entry before the GroupWise entry.

I was having the same problem and after changing the security settings in IIS as RoryJMcKenna suggested, now it works but using their Windows Login name instead of their email address name.
I'm still trying to figure out how users can use their email address name.
