    Administrator Folder

I upgraded a computer from XP home to XP Pro. The administrator folder in the documents and settings folder now has the name administrator followed by a string of letters and numbers. Is there a way to rename it to get rid of them. Thanks.

    SMC USB wireless

Right now I have it set to "start minimized". However it would be nice just to have it in the task bar.I'll take a look at it and see if a right click on the taskbar icon will do anything. I think that I already did that and it only showed "hide" which only works for that one session. Reboot and...

    SMC USB wireless

I have a SMC USB wireless G network adaptor. The utility is set to open on the desktop every time you boot up. It has to run to work, but is there a way to stop it from showing on the desktop. There is no option anywhere to stop this. You can close it and it stays in the task bar on the right...

    Sound Wobble

Just an update. I deinstalled the audio driver that came with the restore disc and installed a sound driver for that machine that I downloaded from the manufacturer's site. Problem solved.

    HP Scan/print/fax connection problem

Our office just got an HP Laser jet 2727nf P/S/F combo. We have it connected to the network and everything works, except the fax from computer function. The fax setup utility will tell you that the "device is disconnected, or powered off" when you are loading the software. It prints fine, scans...

    Sound Wobble

A computer that I support has a wierd problem. I had to reformat and reload XP Pro because of damage from a virus. After that, any sound, windows produced, or CD played in the drive would wobble. I eventually found some unregistered DLL's and registered them. This fixed the sound wobble right...

    copier/fax machine

This is probably a stupid question, but I'll give it a try. Does a device exist that will interface a computer and a copier/fax machine and make it so that it could be used as a printer through the telephone jack?

    Recover files

Thanks for the suggestions on Getdataback. I downloaded the trial copy and ran it. It showed that most of it was recoverable. So I registered it and got most everything recovered. A very nice piece of software. A great addition to my tool box.

    Recover files

A client had a system crash. Wouldn't boot up. System restore didn't work either. Client then choose recovery which put it back to day one. Question is: Are any files recoverable using recovery software, or is it all truely gone, since the partitions were deleted and restored.

    SATA hard drive/IDE CD Rom

I have a sata hard drive and an IDE CD Rom. The question is, do I plug the IDE CD Rom into IDE port 0 and set it for master, or slave. Or should I plug it into IDE port 1 and set it for master or slave. Does it even make a difference since Im using a SATA hard drive.

    Send link won't launch

Machine running XP Pro and IE 7. Email is FirstClass. The "send page by Email" will launch FirstClass, but the "send link by Email" won't do anything. The default Email is set in FirstClass and in IE to FirstClass. The registry settings also look OK. Any ideas?

    Outlook Problem

Having an interesting problem with outlook. If I delete an e-mail and then empty the deleted items folder, they will re-appear in the deleted item folder the next time that you open outlook. The only way to make sure that the folder gets emptied and stays emptied is to hit the send recieve...

    IE 6 Crashing

Hi Glenn. I did un-install that patch and it fixed the problem. I will re-install it and try the work around that you suggested. I'd really rather not go without a security patch. Thanks for all your help.

    Harddrive recognition

I have a laptop with a bios that will only see 40 gigs. Here is the question. If I install a bigger hard drive and partition it to 40 gigs and ghost it fron the old drive, will the bios only work with that partition, or will the bios just through up it's hands. I can't be sure if the bios will...

    Reinstall or Refresh XP

I ran into the same thing recently, but wasn't able to run a repair installation from booting up with the disk. Some licenses won't allow that. What I did was to run a "upgrade" installation from within Windows. "Providing that you can still boot up to Windows". That worked the same as a repair...

    IE 6 Crashing

Thanks for the info. That is what I suspected. I'll have to uninstall that patch and see what happens.

    IE 6 Crashing

I use several Win XP Pro machines that have IE 6 on them. On two of them IE 6 started crashing at the same time in the same manner. If you open IE to a local home page then go to yahoo mail for instance, you will get the send error report box. Afer three tries, it will work. Has anyone been...
