An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably...".
This occured when logging in as Administrator and a temporary profile has been created. I am not unduely concerned about data loss since I can still access the files within \Documents and settings\Administrator but I am unsure...
We have set up a new 2003 server to run terminal services with all remote users logging into a domain based on our old NT server. All in all, it is working very nicely now and I need to look at restricting users in what they can see and do.
I have found some Microsoft info on doing it, they all...
Thanks for the suggestions. I have been on holiday for a week but have spent 3 days solid with about 10 different programs. I have recovered bits and pieces, but I will keep trying!
Please, please tell me I'm not completely sunk!
I MOVED a directory from one W2K PC to another. However, the target PC (which has a backup unit on it and thus the point of the move) crashed partway through the move and I had to reboot. The directory had, however, disappeared from the original...

I MOVED a directory from one W2K PC to another. However, the target PC (which has a backup unit on it and thus the point of the move) crashed halfway through the move and I had to reboot. I then decided that I needed to sort out why the PC crashed...
Thanks for all your help, guys.
It turns out to have been a two-fold problem. I have replaced the switch, which was faulty, and also replaced two of the patch leads which were also faulty.
It all works fine now!
Thanks again.
I have ADSL at home and a PC on a public IP address which acts as a web (Apache) and mail (Argosoft) server for a growing bunch of friends.
Up till now, the computer has been protected by an old corporate version of McAfee VirusScan (v4.5.1) with VShield and it seems to work very well, deleting...
Servamatic - some of the patch cables I made myself, others have been there for some time, but appear to have been made up on site. To be honest, I use whatever Cat5 cable happens to be around and use RJ45 connectors from a catalogue or the electrical shop round the corner, which is usually...
Thanks for your comments. However, the problem is not solved.
I should say that this involves terminal services running on 2003 server. Having connected via TS to the main server from a remote office, I then want to add a printer in the remote office to my printers for use during a TS session...
one of the things to keep in mind about testing patch cables is the length. They should be a minimum of 3 ft, but even then, they can give faulty test results..."
The patch cables are all about 4" - 6" long, just enough to span the gap between patch panel and hub. Are you saying these should be...
O/W, O, G/W, B, B/W, G, Br/W, Br.
However, it seemed so unlikely, that I went back after lunch and tried it all again and one or two of my 'bad' cables worked and one or two of my 'good' ones didn't.
Dispite my original certainty on where the problem was, I think it more likely now that the...
After some weeks of head scratching, I have just come back after spending my Sunday morning solving a slow network problem. Basically, I removed every patch cable and just had two in a hub - one from the server and one from a PC.
I then posted an entry in a financial package on the PC, which...
Can anyone tell me why the Scheduled Tasks are shared? From a W2K PC, if you go to another W2K PC, you will always see the Printers folder, which is fine because Printer and File sharing is normally on, by why the Scheduled Tasks? And how can you turn if off if wanted?
If you open Exchange Admin and select Configuration - Connections on the left hand side and then double-click on Internet Mail Service on the right hand side, you can set the Notifications on the Internet Mail tab.
However, if your system is infected and sending out emails, then unless you have...
Thanks for the reply.
There are no particular permissions set on the printer other than to share it, but other PCs in the local office can print without problem - just the ones in the remote office can't.
I am trying to connect to a printer in a remote office via our VPN link, something that has never been a problem in the past.
However, since some of the remote computers have been upgraded to XP Pro, and one has the printer I want, I get the "A policy is in effect on your computer which...
We have had a Deskjet 1220C (multi-function) running for some months now without a problem on a W2K PC. We tried to install a digital camera recently and although that worked, and continues to do so, the printer does not. We have tried uninstalling it etc. but no luck.
The main problem is that...
