    i.e. the one in the middle of each? can someone please help me to do this, i've tried split, cut, sed, awk all to no avail. i'm obviously missing something here. note the number of name fields change and for what its worth there are <tabs> in each line as well. i'm looking to split each line...

    all, using unix aix - i'm in a rush (aren't we all!) and need to change a file with several lines... example: ca1245 fc6789 rd7452 dp0329 into a one line file seperated by commas(using the example above) ie: ca1245,fc6789,rd7452,dp0329 any suggestions would be welcome. not perl please...

    many thanks for that useful information p5wizard.... just for clarification, the lscfg output includes manufacturer & machine type & model fields - will the latter indicate the type eg "OPEN-L" for san etc. ps/ the ESS & EMC bits, i've not heard of those? again thanks.

    hi all, thanks for replying....some good ideas, though i think i have misled you slightly (sorry!), when i said immediately under root i meant files including those in directories also belonging to the root filesystem eg /etc. the &quot;immediately under&quot; bit though obviously not clear...

    hi... any of you gurus out there know how to search for example big files immediately under root ignoring all of the other filesystems? as you know doing a find / -size +1000000c... give you the job lot. i'm thinking maybe a loop using a grep -v against the $7 (Mounted on) field of the df -k...
