Thanks BBB,
I think you're right.
Now when I get into POST it tells me; Drive 1 not found: Serial ATA, SATA-1
However, I have my drive installed in SATA-0 --
BIOS recognizes the drive. In addition, I removed the drive yesterday and took to a friends computer in order to retrieve some critical...
Thanks Wahnula,
I have reseated and unplugged almost everything. The insides could definately use a good cleaning.
I will try to reset / replace battery as I haven't done that.
To answer your questions - i am unable to get into the BIOS so therefore am unable to boot to CD.

I shut down my computer last night and when I powered up this morning all I got was the Dell logo screen to black screen with blinking cursor in upper left. I was not able to enter setup or boot menu as F2 or F12 did nothing.

I have XP Pro and use the fax feature quite often. However, if I want to view an incoming fax or a sent fax it opens up in Photoshop, which only allows me to see the 1st page. I can not figure out how to view the fax pages in the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
Thanks, J
Well...I'm not sure what you mean. Those drivers were already installed during setup. If I try to update the drivers on the new HD it finds nothing even using the floppy that was necessary during setup for 3rd party drivers.
I installed and ran Western Digitals HD installation program...using...
I have a Dell 8400 w/ SATA HD. When I bought the computer it came with XP Home. I wiped the HD and installed XP Pro - at that time setup could find the HD but the solution was in the BIOS settings as described here; http://www.djdenham.com/8400%20Special.htm
Now I have installed a 2nd HD...
yes I tried that option and it still found no HD. the only difference was it now says it could not determine the type of mass storage device - then says to press S to specify additional SCSI adapters, CD-Rom drives or special disk controllers...

I just got a new Dell 8400 desktop w/ XP Home installed.
I wanted to install XP Pro but it says that setup is unable to find the Hard Drive.
My copy of XP Pro is from 2002, but I'm wondering if this has to do with the SATA HD.
Your help is appreciated,
Jeff

I recently installed XP Pro on my machine and had everything working tip-top, then I did the automattic updates which included Service Pack 1 (if anything else was installed I wasn't aware of it, but I imagine there were several other updates). Since then my cable internet has slowed to a...
I have tried virtually every combination possible with 2 nics and a modem. System starts fine w/ 1 nic and 1 modem, or nic only or modem only, but 2 nics - no go, 2 nics and modem - no go. I've moved all 3 around in different slots and different combos but it wont boot w/ 2 nics. The nics I'm...
After installing a second nic card the system would hang at updating ESCD... After powering down taking out the new nic poping out the CMOS battery it would restart. It wouldn't restart w/o pulling the CMOS battery.

When I open up Network and Dial-up Connections in the control panel, right click on my Local Area Connection and go to Properties, I have a General tab but no Sharing tab.
I checked add windows components in add/remove programs but it's not listed. Any idea why I don't have this feature.
Thanks
I just finished reinstalling a Win 98 system. Prior to formatting I put in a new d-link nic. The nic came from SBC/Yahoo. As the OS install finished the PnP picked up the nic and installed it. In the device mgr it showed an Intel 8255... installed and working properly. On a subsequent...
There is no integrated NIC. I assumed that the chipset was the intel, but the fact that it was still trying to install after the card was removed is what really confused me. The nic, installed as intel 8255, was not passing data to the ISP, so no it was not working.
