Hope I understan what you mean, I did this once:
1 put a clip in the overlay track
2.right click the clip aand chose motion feature
there you can control movement, size in %, and location
on the screen, in the track you can use the fade, fx etc.

the lengh of the movie depends of the export setting and the timeline lengh, when exporting check the settings for "export the timeline" or workspace. also check the in/out workspace, it is above in the timeline.
about the black cuts in transitions place, reinstall those from your CD.
I had the same problem, try checking in project settings/general/edit mode: if is dv playback, check the settings for only "playback on desktop", take off any other output like dv camcorder or vcr.
I captured 3 clips of 4gb each in avi format from my DV Camcorder, when I place it in the timeline or play it as open clip it only show almost 15 seconds instead the 15 minutes that is the real lenght. If I open it with Quick Time or Win Media Player it show the clip complete.
