    okay so... The Oracle tech came out this morning and replaced the drive. I varied it online and ... tada. there are 2 morals here: 1. wait until the tech replaces the drive before asking others for help. 2. pay for technical support. @R1957: it's an SL8500. and thanks.

    Hi, we had a tape break inside a 9940b drive. Oracle came out and declare the drive broken and manually remove the tape from the drive. I couldn't vary the drive off before it was removed (in use) and can't seem to do anything to it now(offline). 0, 2, 1, 2 offline in use...
