Try using percentages or em instead of pixels. Pixels are open to interpretation by different browsers, whereas using em or percentage will keep everything relative.

Eric Meyer's definitely the father of CSS but I don't know if buying a book is the best answer, as they can go out of date pretty quickly. I'd look for an on-line resource that's updated regularly.
