Have you tried setting the emulation type to ansi or vt-100
instead of auto-detect ? I sometimes find I get lots of problems with hyperterminal so use procomm+ or netterm (which is shareware if the internet) Have a go? Good luck
You can create your own frame relay network using private circuits. In the form of a star topology.
Ingredients
1. Cisco switch eg7000 series
2. nx Kbps private circuits
3. Cisco routers as CPU's eg.1700
There are cheaper options availiable and frame relay wouldn't necesarry be the best...

from each port of the box you can simulate any type of service providing you use the correct router configuration.
