    Tape vs Cloud vs?

Tape has its place in my view. Sure tapes can fail, but if looked after properly - written to above the streaming speed to avoid 'shoe-shining', handled and packed correctly if moved etc ... they can be very reliable. ... but I would agree, they can still fail, but, then again so can disks...

    Stupid customers

To be fair, Symantec AV is vastly improved from what it was, it was completely re-written 2 or 3 years back from memory - if it would have protected from CryptoLocker I don't know, but then again, I've seen Nod32 miss a virus that had been knocking around for ages - at the time this happened...

    Backing up Mount points

Hmm, what is in the bpbkar log (from the client ).

    NetBackup vxlogcfg LogToOslog

If you mean you wish to direct the individual logs to the syslog file you can't do this. The vxlogs can be moved location, as in a different directory and in NBU this should be done with the vxlog commands, so that the log location is set in the nblog.conf file (a file that must not be edited...

    challenges and non technical managers

When I get how long a problem will take - the answer is simply "I'll tell you when I've finished it". If it were suggested that my job was 'easy' - I would invite the person in question to do it for me.

Annoying error message 800. How to resolve it?

Settings that could affect this sort of error Max job per policy Max job per client Max job per storage unit Max concurrent write drives setting in storage unit Check MPX level is schedules if using MPX Other ideas, recreate storage unit, with NO jobs running, run nbrbutil -resetall Martin

All jobs fail with 800 status - no drives available

I presume here you mean the master server has been renamed. In a nutshell, this cannot be done, the name of the master server is 'embedded' withing the EMM DB and if the hostname is changed things will stop working. There is a way to rename a master server, but it requires the services of a...

    Netbackup upgrade question

Ok, go with my advice. If you are unsure, best to log a call with Symantec. Easier to do this and x2 check, than have to fix things later. Martin

    Netbackup upgrade question

1)Does the catalog need to be in place prior to the upgrade, or can we upgrade and then restore the catalog? 2) We will be maintaining the current master server name. This is a requirement, the master server hostname cannot be changed without consulting services. 1) When you upgrade, you do...

Migrate images to more dense media

The header is just a 1K block - dd should copy this also - note, the copied tape will need an identicle bar code of course ... I've just tried it, coping the header from one tape to another using dd ... Only way to find it, it to give it a go I guess ... Here I have two tapes in two drives...

    Manual backups

You could make the drives non-robotic, and then try loading the tapes manually.

Migrate images to more dense media

If you are on Unix, then the dd command may work. This performs a block-by-block copy of the tape. Martin

NetBackup 6.5 Media Type for Cleaning tape

    1. Yes, I believe None is the correct volume pool. Correct 2. If you use barcode rules I believe you can specify that. Yep 3. vmchange -new_mt media_type -m <media id> Yep, media type should xxx_clean Martin

point media server to different master server

Hi Ross, 4a) reconfigure is not recommended; re-install is preferred. Who told you this ? I can't think of any reason to reinstall. A media server an 6.x onwards is nothing more than a slightly clever client, I cannot think of any reason to reinstall. You might want to clear out the log...

Can I save the DR file on a tape in NetBackup 6.5.6

You can, simply backup the filesystem/ directory where it resides. However, this would be an issue if you need to recover it, when the Netbackup server requires a Catalog recovery. The DR file will be required for the recovery, but, it is on a tape which you will be unable to recovery easily...

    Copy tape for offsite storage

SLP required Advanced Disk, which needs a license unfortunately. Vault would be ideal for this situation, other possibles are : SLP (as mentioned) Inline tape copy (aka mulltiple copies) Set a final destination storage unit Martin

could not write tape mark to begin new image

We need a few more details I think ... What is the o/s When did the issue start Did anything change (drivers, firmware, os patch etc ...) Is this on all drives Anything in the logs : o/s sys log bptm (VERBOSE = 5 in bp.conf) ltid (VERBOSE in vm.conf) tpcommand Re-start mm services Martin
