drive enclosure does not work with USB2

Garebo, There actually is something I failed to mention regarding the power supply. I bought a bay cooler with a couple of small fans because I was worried about over-heating, and after installing it the system lost its mind when booting up - on one boot it would not recognize any of the...

drive enclosure does not work with USB2

Thanks for all the good info. When you say you don't have all your hard drives going at the same time, does that mean they are external drives that are offline or at least turned off? If they're internal, then of course they must all be on whenever your computer is on, no? I currently have 4...

drive enclosure does not work with USB2

I told my friend that I didn't see why it would work with USB 1 if it were the power supply, but he said that it's possible that the USB 2 card could be just enough to push it over, if it was that close to the edge. I agree that it doesn't seem that likely, but since he knows hardware I'm...

drive enclosure does not work with USB2

Thanks. I will try using a different cable, and I will also call the manufacturer. A friend suggested that my power supply may not be up to snuff, so I'll see what happens after I replace that. I'll report back any results, pos or neg.

drive enclosure does not work with USB2

The drive is just a regular internal drive, but I bought a Bytecc IDE to USB 2.0 enclosure and put the drive inside. And yes, the cable is the one that came with the enclosure. I do have Windows 2000 Professional, so that's not an issue. I tried using the Microsoft USB 2 driver, but that didn't...

drive enclosure does not work with USB2

I'm still having a problem. I installed Service Pack 4 but Windows 2000 still does not see an external drive that is plugged into my IOGEAR USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller Card. I also have USB 1 on my system, connected to a USB hub, and the drive can be seen that way. I was told that...

drive enclosure does not work with USB2

Ah, that's the problem! No I didn't realize I had to apply service packs in order to get USB 2 to work, but that makes sense. At the same time I installed USB 2 and the new external drive, I also installed both XP (for the first time) and Win2k (due to a crash), and no service packs have been...

drive enclosure does not work with USB2

I just bought a Bytecc ME-320 Series external drive enclosure, Model No. ME320U2 IDE to USB 2.0. I then put a 200GB hard drive in there. The problem is, when I plug the device into the USB 2.0 port, the system does not see it. It only sees it when I plug it into the old USB 1.1 port. I tried...

    Why can't I zip folders?

Sorry, I neglected to mention that I did check the box to include subfolders, as well as the box to include full path information, but I still didn't get any folders in the zip file itself, or when I extracted everything. I was wondering if there was some other configuration setting that should...

    Why can't I zip folders?

I'm using Winzip 8.1 and I want to zip a top level folder that contains sub-folders, but all the files end up together in the zip file, with no folders. I chose the option to save the path information but when I extract the files they all go to the same folder. Isn't there a way to maintain the...

    an interesting question

Thank you all for your input. My Win98 system is not infected but I was just wondering if it was vulnerable while I continue to debug the problem of having no internet connection, and consequently no firewall. My machine is not connected to any network other than my cable modem, and in that case...

    an interesting question

I understand how the virus could access my win98 partition through win2000 when it is running and connected to the internet. But if win2000 is not running, I guess I'm still having a problem understanding how a virus would gain access to my computer. Aren't these software ports that the virus...

    an interesting question

Wow. I guess it wasn't a silly question. I thought for sure that everyone would say you had to have an o/s connected to the internet for anyone to get in. Will wonders never cease?

    Losing DHCP

Thanks all! I'll let you know what happens.

    an interesting question

Or a silly question perhaps, but I don't know the answer. If I have dual boot with win2000 and win98, and I have a cable connection going in win2000, but no connection (and thus no firewall) going in win98, is my machine vulnerable to attacks when it's in win98?

    Losing DHCP

Thanks to both of you. I'll try these suggestions when I get the time on Monday, as I'm in the middle of a 4-day conference. Matt, how do I reinstall TCP/IP? I did try reinstalling Win98, although it didn't appear to change anything - would this have reinstalled it or can I do it separately?

    Losing DHCP

Yes. I neglected to mention that I have dual boot, and when I boot into Win2000 I have an internet connection, so the cable company says that they are providing me with a connection, and that the problem is on my end, and for me to solve.

    Losing DHCP

I have just replaced my Toshiba cable modem with an RCA modem. Now whenever I reboot, I have internet access at the start of the reboot (confirmed by my cable company) and then I immediately get locked out. In winipconfig I can initially see a valid IP address, confirmed by the cable company...

DHCP works on start-up, BUT won't repair

Sorry, I can't help, other than to say that I have a very similar problem in Windows 98/SE. Everything was working fine until 2 days ago, when I replaced my cable modem (Toshiba) with a new one (RCA). Whenever I reboot, I have internet access at the start of the reboot (confirmed by my cable...
