OK problem solved ...i figured i'd post
it here in cases someone else runs into
similiar problems.
my first instinct that it was a ram problem
was correct. i thought it might be since the
crashes occured randomly but they seemed to
happen sooner if i used more ram ...
i have four one gig...
1. ok ...i ran memtest86 all night as it were,
and i the "errors" field has 6685772 in it.
sounds like bad ram. i'm not sure how to read
the memtest results and/or if it outputs a log.
i read through their website but that part is
unclear there ...
2. this is what i got from unchecking...
excellent advice
in the meanwhile i found a program called
memtest-86 and i'm in the process of running that.
as soon as it completes i'll turn the auto-reboot
off and log the errors ...

i have winxp64 running on dual core athlon machine.
never had problems until now.
all of a sudden i can't boot the computer up.
when i press F8 - i can get to the screen to select
how to boot - safe, last working etc.. - but once
i select any one of the choices the next screen says:

i finally got the drive working this morning.
as it turns out it WAS the boot order.
in case anyone will have a similiar option:
i set the jumpers to cable select.
tried a couple of boot order changes till
i got it to boot. i know this part sounds vague,
but...
it tries to boot, won't get far but
i do see a "/" rotating on the left
top corner. i'd have to try again to
see if there were a couple of lines
of text or not ...but then it hangs ...

yeah ...i am sure :) triple checked it.
i finally did figure a way to fix the situation.
in case anyone else ever has this problem. it's a little
complicated but works like a dream.
1. i downloaded cygwin from wwww.cygwin.com
(it is a unix /linux emulator - i'm old unix hack :)...

i never get a permissions (or security) tab ...
in properties or sharing (when i right click) i
do get a sharing window (no security) and there is
a button to set permissions. but when i click on it

my old computer croaked. i'd like to move the C: drive,
which works fine to a newer computer. i connected it
