I just had the exact situation with my Inspiron. Apparently with this particular hard drive in Dell laptops this is a common problem.
If the computer is still under warranty with Dell, they will replace the drive at no charge if you return the defective drive.

You need to be sure the problem isn't the hard drive before you go on. I am still leaning toward bad hard drive.
