I'm giving some consideration to putting Vista back on.
I keep scouring the web and trying driver after driver,
swapping my SUBSYS in for the one listed, etc
and it just seems like a compatible XP driver doesn't exist.
I had a couple issues with Vista, but it also had
a couple things I liked...
So I contacted HP. Limited help because I'm using XP
and it came with Vista.
The guy told me that the mic should work with the sound
card driver (nothing to do with the webcam) and that the
Vista driver makes it work just fine.
So I went to the HP support page and downloaded the
Vista driver...
I had something like this happen when users got viruses on their computers. Logon and then immediate logoff.
I think I could still log on as administrator in Safe mode, though.
Load up Device Manager again.
Right-click on the one with the question mark
and go to Properties, then to the Details tab.
It should list something like the following:
HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_14F1&DEV_5051&SUBSYS_103C36.........
You can google the "FUNC_**&VEN_****" or you can
type out what you...
Oh yeah, the two drivers that DriverAgent said

HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
NVIDIA HDMI Audio Device

might fix it, but I'm not that hopeful.
The mic worked when I had Vista installed, yes.
I hooked up an external mic and it works too.
I tried DriverAgent, but it doesn't tell me what driver
I need, it just gives me a download link which requires
me to purchase a year's worth of DriverAgent downloads.
BigBadBen:
The link to download the driver on the page you gave
doesn't work. However, I think I already have the
same driver (Conexant HD-Audio SmartAudio 221), using
driver file "WiSVHe5.inf".

Ran the wizard as you suggested.
Full Duplex Sound Test: Passed
Half Duplex Sound Test: Passed
Mic Test: Failed gracefully
When I click Troubleshoot... a box comes up:
"The wizard tests your sound hardware and records the test results. Clearing the test results will cause the wizard...
I recently bought a Compaq CQ50Z. I downgraded from the default installed Vista to Windows XP Professional.
I used the instructions and drivers from these two sites:
