Are you using a FQDN (Fully qualified domain name) or just the computer name? We have had a similar problem on our webfarm where one of the servers had an identical name to another site. By adding the domain name to the end of the name it resolved correctly.

There was a rumour from both Compaq and IBM that they were investigating this route. Their plan was to remove the CD and floppy drive from a server, and use a USB device to boot from. I am not sure how far they got with this idea, perhaps a search of their sites might give you some pointers.

To enable us to track all MS patches and to install them we use LanDesk. I realise that this is probably an expensive option for you to investigate, but it might give you a starting poing. Microsoft also do a patch management system which you might like to look at.
