Many states here in the US are charging fees when you purchase a new PC, assuming I suppose that you will be getting rid of your old one. So, if you can find someone to take it, all the better. Or you could be paying twice for the same thing (at least us Yanks will ;-)).
I have done this with an old Compaq case I had with a one piece panel plug. I cut the plug apart with an exacto knife. It was kind of fun (or dorky ;-)) to do. As franklin said, make sure to do your research on what goes where.

The data should be ok. I say should, because the more someone fiddles with a drive, the more chances data can be overwritten. I doubt this is the problem in your case, but I just wanted to remind you of this.

To answer the first question, it is okay to update USBSTOR.SYS by itself. DISK.SYS is a class driver and is independent of specific devices.
As far as installing SP4, it would be a good idea, to take full advantage of the ECHI 2.0 USB features.

It sounds like the dynamic disk database has been corrupted. Running a partition repair program should fix the issue. I avoid dynamic disks on my pc at home, simply because I like to keep things simple. I have included an excerpt from Microsoft's website that gives the more techy...
