Got it! (I think.)
Instead of running Proxo from the "all users" group, I think that I'll give each Web-enabled user his/her own startup link for Proxo, so that I can give the daughter-in-question her own .ini and therefore her own bypass list without too much trouble.
Thanks, D.

I don't think that I could do that in my case. I want the sites to run through the real local proxy (Proxomitron) that I have set up for the whole machine, and I can't think offhand of a way to chain an imaginary proxy server.
I realize that I could set up a second copy of Proxomitron just for...
Hi!
I'm running Windows XP Pro with IE6, Opera 10, and Firefox 3.5. I'd like a solution for my problem which works easily with at least one of these browsers, preferably all.
I normally don't let my younger children use the World Wide Web unless they have some good reason. One of them wants...
No, I've got a standalone machine and I'm pretty sure that it's not infested.
Could lack of RAM alone be the problem? I've got only 512 MB, but Windows Task Manager seems always to show some still available - while I'm looking, anyway.
On the other hand, the system seems fine when I first...
Good morning!
I have read that having a lot of files on one's desktop can slow down Windows XP, since all of the files will be loaded into RAM.
1. Is this true?
2. Does it apply to all of the desktops (at system startup, I suppose), or only to the desktop of the user who is logged in?
3...
Good evening!
I am running WinXP Home, and hooked up to the network through a Siemens NAT router and an old Sygate Personal Firewall.
I would like for some of the Windows users to be able to use the Internet, and some to be blocked from it. I'd like to be able to do this either free or very...
I have two machines on my home network, my own WinXP Pro machine called Me and my kids' WinXP home machine called Them. I have some scripts which I want use to make some backups from Me to Them. So far, the only way to make them work is to manually log on to Them from Me whenever I reboot one...
Good morning!
I am just a casual user of Java. I have on my machine both "J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7" and "Java(TM) 6 Update 5".
Is there any reason I shouldn't just remove the older one?
Thanks.

I can't use that gadget, since I'm running Win2000, not XP or 2003. In any case, I don't believe that it's a problem with auto-detection: the problem isn't that it can't auto-detect; the drive can't read DVDs at all, under any circumstances.

Good evening!
Suddenly, whenever I put a DVD into my DVD burner and try to see what's on it, I get a message saying "K: is not accessible. Incorrect function". This includes many old DVDs which used to work in it just fine, and DVDs which I have just burned on the same burner. The same drive...
Suddenly, I can't print on my HP 690c. (I'm running Win2000.) If I try to print either a real document or the test page from the Windows printer gadget, the printer starts to respond, as if it's about to pull the paper, and then get a "Device is not connected". The device obviously is...
Good morning!
I am now the proud owner of an LCD display, and know almost nothing about them. First question: I read somewhere on the Web that the pixels on some LCDs are black when in their unpowered, passive state, and that others are white in their unpowered passive state. How do I know...
Good afternoon!
I was using a freeware LAN-monitoring gadget to do some general snooping around my own LAN, looking for security problems, and it reported (in red) that port 3127, which it calls "3127 trojan => W32.Mydoom" is open on my NAT router. I can think of no reason why such a port...
Yup.
You may know more about Windows than I do, but you certainly don't have an older memory than I do. I was the best man at the wedding of Adam and Eve.
The rktools.exe itself, from that page which you sent me to, refuses to install itself on Win2000. It says it needs WinXP or later. If robocopy doesn't need to be installed, though, it might work on Win2000. Do you know where I can get a standalone copy?

Good morning!
I am using a script to run XCOPY (on Win2K) repeatedly to copy a single file to a different drive. I can't find a way to suppress the prompt which asks me whether I want the destination to be a file or a folder. I want it to be a file. How do I suppress the prompt?
Thanks.
