OK, I found it. I have a Speaker Phone input on my modem card that I never use - I tried disabling the driver for this and hey presto ! the AC97 inputs now work.

It's always been like this (first time I've tried it anyway). Its a Gateway 650 Mhz PIII, Belarc advisor reports the motherbaord as an Intel WL810E AAA27218-204
I have a Windows 2000 PC with an on-board soundcard. The audio output to speakers/headphones works fine, but neither the Line In nor Mic inputs give me any sound - this is even with the standard Windows Sound Recorder.
The audio hardware is an Intel 82801AA controller, with Windows AC97 audio...
