Novell say they don't support Windows XP Home but I installed client by myself on two notebook Toshiba with XP Home installed. There were no any problems.
Are you able to install client on workstation completely? Wich of protocols do you use for connection to NW server? TCP/IP or IPX/SPX...

My boss use notebook with Windows XP Home Ed and NW client 4.83SP2. Evrything works without any problem. I think you should check your network connection, types of IPX/SPX frames (they should be the same on server and workstation ) or TCP/IP settings.
