It turned out that the outdoor splitter was rusted through inside the CATV box....Tech replaced all the wiring...Of course I reformatted my hard drive for no reason then!
well anyway, internet is back!!!!!!!!!!

I went ahead and re-formatted the hard drive. Put a clean XP Pro SP1 OS on. Ran the extensive cleaning procedure called about by http://www.castlecops.com/forums.html on the new xp load...Of course pretty clean...

I will go with your defense app set-up, except I have outpost firewall instead of XP. I made clean install of XP Pro, then installed all hardware drivers. 2nd, I made a clone of the drive with Norton ghost. This is the 2nd time I have been burnt!

Both PC's are behind an SMC router w/ cable modem. I have Spybot Search and Destroy. I never knew that Spybot had that host file replace option?? I have outpost firewall pro 2.1, and adaware installed too. I guess the popups have not been that bad.
