Maybe we should thank "Bcastner" and "linney" for the FAQ and mention my name for putting it together.

Thanks for your post. As I mentioned above, I am looking for something that I can work with in windows XP, and that article is specific to windows NT, although it sounds exactly what I am looking for. I'm wondering if the same procedure could be used for windows XP with the same results...
I want to have a program or .exe run as a service in the background of windows XP, i.e. when you type services.msc, I want to be able have a program running as service, like my web server and stuff like hotmail popper for thunderbird. Please note that I don't want to add this to a scheduled...
After much deliberation I managed to get a freeware server setup on my computer and I am wondering what kind of download speeds should be expected. I have read that people can download stuff between 1-10 Mb/sec which I think is amazing, however, the fastest speed someone can download so far...
...under serv-u. I downloaded DNS4me which takes my dynamic IP address and makes it a static one. So I do have a static address of 24.224.211.***(not that I don't trust anybody here). My IP name looks something like johndoe.dns4me.com, and so everything is good there. So that is the dynamic...
I want to set up a way to share share files on a connection with my friend who is running XP Home. I am running XP Pro and I think we could set something up if he is running XP Pro, but because he is running XP Home is that going to be a problem? If it is possible, are there any good KB...
90 seconds to boot up, you must be running an old computer or something, I also have all the full edition of Norton 2003 and I think my 45 second boot time is too slow, but I have managed to get it down to about 30 seconds so I am happy about that.
"We have no right to assume that any...
I will give you my input for what its worth. I ran norton 2002 systemworks and I upgraded to norton 2003 systemworks a few months ago and I will tell you that my computer is slow starting up because of this program. With norton firewall and anti-virus starting up, it defintely takes away from...
I didn't mean anything bad by my comment so I hope you didn't interpret it that way. Depending on which way you want to go, you can leave windows XP alone and just put in the Red hat linux CD and use the formatting tools on Red hats CD called disk druid. You will need 3 partitions for your Red...
That question has been asked a lot lately, just for future reference if you do a search for dual boot or something under search posts by keyword, you will find a gold mine of information. Anyways, look at my post in this thread and it should tell you everything you need to know, from editing...
I would like to reinforce the point made by wolluf. NEVER use the tool drive mapper in partition magic, I understand exactly what you want to do because I tried to do the same thing and let me tell you it didn't work for me. Have a gander at this thread and you'll see why.

Probably not the problem but I had this same issue before and then someone kindly remind me that DOS can only see partitions with FAT32 file system and cannot see the new NTFS, so if those partitions on your hard drive are NTFS you cannot see them in DOS. Probably not the problem but I guess...
...thing to do is search your computer for temporary files and folders and delete them. Go to search and look in all files and folder and search for *.tmp files. Also in IE under tools --> internet options there is a button you can push to delete all those wonderful cookies that accumulate...
I learned that the hard way, I did what you said about the repair option and a new copy of windows was installed and all my new programs were still installed. Thanks x508 and bcastner for your replies.

I recently installed windows XP Pro on another hard drive and installed programs that I have and everything was working fine, I downloaded all the services packs and life was good. I installed partition magic and I noticed under my computer that the drive letters were changed around, I have C...
Thanks for your post, I am not really doing anything, just experimenting with tools like fdisk and stuff, anyways you answered my question because the partitions E: and F: are NTFS and not FAT32, so I will have to change that. I also thought there was a key you could hold down that will boot...
I have windows XP on one hard disk and I have a second hard drive with two partitions. I can see these partitions when I run command or cmd in windows XP no problem. I made a bootdisk (I don't know how to boot from DOS instead of loading windows XP, something like holding down the shift key or...
