We are using a ShoreTel system. It replaced our Cisco CallManager Express installation a while ago. ShoreTel is cheaper, has more functionality "out of the box" and is much easier to implement and maintain. I'm very happy with it.

...PDM to 303 (or higher - I think 304 is curent). In case you cannot upgrade, you need to downgrade your jre to a 1.4 version (remember to deinstall 1.5 before). But this might cause problems with stuff that needs jre 1.5.

Did I mention that I hate these java version problems? >:-<
Well, the problem is: you do *not* get any "password expires in..." warnings when you connect through the VPN client and you are just locked out when it happens. Home office workers typically run into this issue.
But there is a mechnism to let you change your password from the VPN client in...
...easily disable the W2K Time Service and install a real NTP server+client. I use a Windows port of the official Unix ntpd. You can download it from
http://www.five-ten-sg.com/util/ntp4172.zip
It works very well at no cost. If you want to learn more about NTP visit
http://www.ntp.org/...
...is not a big problem. If you have Volition cabling in your building, that's fine. You need patch cables anyways to connect your devices. So simply use patch cables with the proper connectors, e.g. VF45 to SC-Duplex, and that's it. There's absolutely no need to have VF45 everywhere.

Exactly one hour.
The description of sysUpTime is: The time (in hundredths of a second) since the network management portion of the system was last re-initialized.

...and give them IP addresses:
ifconfig eth0:0 10.10.128.1 netmask 255.255.255.0
ifconfig eth0:1 10.10.129.1 netmask 255.255.255.0
You can put the commands in a shell script so that you don't have to enter them after each reboot (but who needs to reboot a Linux machine, anyway? :-).

...the two switches.
Stacking the 2600 switches is purely virtual and does not require any special or additional connections. Any regular Ethernet LAN connectivity will do. The stack commander communicates with stack members by means of Ethernet MAC address.
Hope this clarifies things a bit. *Rob
That's interesting. I didn't know the 7960 supports telnet - and it doesn't work on mine (connection refused). I'm running P00303020214 image.
But I can connect it with a web browser and get all the settings and statistics displayed.

...Should pretty much work the same way.
BTW, this is called "router-on-a-stick", because it is routing several IP networks over a single interface.
This setup will only simulate Ethernet connections. If you are going to test boxes with e.g. integrated DSL modem, it won't work.

...I'd go this way:
Assign an IP address to the switch that is to become the cluster command switch, connect to it via web browser and use the web interface to configure it as cluster command switch. After that you can add the other switches to the cluster - again via web interface.

...will tell you, and there is a download link provided.
Firmware updates are also best done throuh the web interface. Although you can download the latest firmware from Cisco, strictly speaking, you are not allowed to install it unless you have a Cisco SmartNet contract for the switch.

...an ISDN call setup packet was meant for. Unfortunately, most fax machines are still analog and have no way to set this field.
I think it wouldn't be a big deal to implement a "disconnect call on fax signal received" feature in IOS. You could submit this as a feature request to Cisco.

...need the driver and diagnostic utility from 3Com, not the driver that comes with Windows!).
Hmm, just wondering: Are you using the driver that comes with Windows? In any case, you should use the latest driver from 3Com. Perhaps this will solve the problem without configuring anything...
...like me, has learned the VLAN thing from the ground up and understands 802.1Q tagging, it is easier to understand what Nortel and others do. BTW, the BayStack 450 manual has a very good chapter on VLANs. This is, how it works. The hard part is, to transfer this to Cisco terminology.

For traffic statistics I use a combination of MRTG (SNMP backend), RRDTOOLS (database) and Routers2Cgi (frontend).
My favourite sniffer still is Ethereal.
All OpenSource and available for Linux and Windows.

...you are low on budget, you start thinking about which features you really need. Does it have to be a Mercedes or will VW get you there as well?
Please, get me right. I don't want to start a flame war about Layer 8 and 9 (Politics and Religion :-)). This is just my personal opinion.

You have to watch out for the spanning tree forwarding delay.
See http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/so/cuso/epso/entdes/hsrp_wp.pdf and especially http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/619/8.pdf to avoid problems.

...mismatch, i.e. one side runs half duplex, the other side runs full duplex.
Please double check, that both ends of the link are configured for *fixed* 100Mbit/s full duplex and auto-negotiation is disabled.
In general, I think it's better to try *both* sides set to auto-negotiation first...
