i'd use bpmedialist -U to see how much data is on particular media id's. the challenge is you don't necessarily know your compression ratio you're actually getting until the tape is full. but this will give you a good idea of the space being occupied. also look in the goodies directory and...- backupscripts

duplicate the tape image to a disk storage unit, change the disk storage unit image to be the primary. all of this can be done with the bpduplicate cli command. there shouldn't be a limit on the disk storage unit as it relates to restores.
