SS3-4400 sending flood of alert emails, "authentication failure"

I get similiar messages but they are concerning the "snmp trap authentication" not radius/.x stuff. If you are using a network manager (like Network Director) then you have a trap reciever IP address setup and an SNMP read and write password(community string). Check the switch: System...

    3com WX4400 tips and tricks

Anyone out there running a WX4400 mobility domain? Wireless switch manager software? Let's share tips and tricks.

    Fiber link issues?

14db loss in 400 foot is very high, I think either the test equipment wasn't "zero out" before test or you have some bad termination/fiber. Check the results from either end, is it better or worse depending on which end of the link you test from? Try to make the hardware link up "locally" with...

    Minimum Run In Data Center

I was not aware of a minimun length for a cable run. Fiber does have such issues, but I've never heard of it in copper. If there is such a rule, then how can you attach a server to a switch with a 6' patch cable, if there was such a rule there would only be huge patch cables. I say...

    3com 4400 and netgear GSM7224 switches

I am not sure how many slots you have open but the single port 1000baseSX fiber module is part number 3C17221. I don't know if you have $$$ but you should look at your setup to make sure you are not wasting the GigABit by having a 10/100 bottleneck in your backbone.

How to Connect to WAN Before Logging into Windows?

Supplicant = wzc or the "manufacturers software" depending on the nic, mostly Truemobile or Intel ProSet. Security = WEP

    Cat6 recommendations

We use Bertek and Ortronics, I like the Series II connectors from Ortronics. They are larger than most connectors which helps with the terminations, fat fingers being what they are. I can still fit 12 drops in a double plate even though the jacks are larger. Lots of accessories available...

    Gigabit over Cat-5e

Mikeydidit: That is as clear as mud, didn't see anywhere that there was a difference between "Cat5E" and "Cat5e" Any else heard of this distinction?

    Radio between two buildings

You can use any Access Point that has removable ant., Bridge mode or at least Client mode in software. I like using Client mode because the main AP is also usable as a normal AP for wireless clients. If you set them up as Bridge, you loose all normal wifi access. Fleeman Anderson and Bird is...

How to Connect to WAN Before Logging into Windows?

We had/have the same problem... another symptom is if you cable the machine, log on, log off, disconnect cable, activate wireless nic, then it will logon fine..... otherwise it can't find the domain. We thought we had it figured out with a Policy edit but now it is a problem at another site...

Find Wireless Access Point IP Address

Another trick is to use "Angry IP scanner". You can scan the entire network and try the active addresses only, this saved my butt recently when an AP switched itself back to dhcp from static address. Found the device in the scan and reconfigured it.

    Radio between two buildings

Reminds me of funny story: Client calls, they have just cut the fiber to remote building and are desperate. I show up with my "emergency bag of tricks" and setup a wireless bridge between the buildings. I used 2 AP's setup in bridge mode and ran cable for ant. out window. Mounted ant. on 10'...

    Cat6 bonded pairs tips needed!

I am trying to find out tips on installing/terminating the bonded UTP cabling. I have a tough time separating a pair enough to fit it over the stuffer block. Seems like they over-engineered this cabling, if it is so hard to make a gap in the pair then the installers are going to resort to...

    Gigabit over Cat-5e

Okay, I'll bite..... What is with the Big E vs Little e stuff? I have a friend that insists there is a difference yet I can find no documentation for this. Now I see it mentioned here! BTW: I have a Gig connection running on Cat3 at 50meters. Up for more than a year, zero...

    Questions about 3com network supervisor.

The clouds you speak of are a pain. Sometimes they are caused by having "non managed" devices on the LAN. Also, you may have "managed" devices that have incorrect SNMP community strings. One of the problems I have is with "mobile" devices. If I scan today and a client machine is found on...
