In version 7.5, we setup our user security by palette (ie it's way easier to restrict a user by palette). We wouldn't have to worry about restricting the windows, because if they couldnt' access the palette, they couldn't get to the underlying windows. I did restrict certain windows that were accessible via a zoom link though.

Now that I have upgraded to version 8 in a test environment, our users have full access to almost everything because the palettes are now gone ie they can see setup, utilities, routines etc. If we had security in 7.5 that restricted all setup palettes, why can this same user in version 8 go to tools setup and see every module and then get into every window?????!!!!!!!!

Our Smartlist security seems to be intact, but now all users have access to all the tasks ie financial, sales, purchasing. We have to completely redo our entire security structure now. We have over 60 users. Don't recall seeing this in their documentation.

I have gone into advanced security and am manually redoing my classes. I
have everything except purchasing marked for one class. However, when I log
in as that user I still have access to:

File > backp and restore

View > all lists (sales, financial etc)

Tools

Setup > Business alerts, payroll tax
Posting > Payroll accts
Payroll > all

Reports > Payroll > All

Cards

Financial > Budgets
Payroll > all

I can I remove access to these? I don't want a purchaser opening budgets, looking at finacial lists etc.

Applying security with Standard Security to the palette window in v7.X could be used to block access via the Toolbar and Palette navigation model to sections of the application. However, as the windows themselves were still available, navigation by other methods such as Shortcuts or drill down/zooming would have bypassed this model.

If you used Advanced Security in v7.X with the By Toolbar view, it would roll down the security to all the windows which come of the palette (and optionally the palette itself) which would fully apply the security and cannot be bypassed.

In version 8.0 you can use Advanced Security's By Menu view and re-apply your security and allow it to roll down to the windows on each menu.

In your second message, there are some menu choices which run code rather than opening a window. This means that the Advanced Security By Menu view is unable to map to an actual form. If a window is opened by that code, you will need to use the By Dictionary view to disable access to the window.

Some of the top level menu choices cannot be removed entirely.

Hope this helps.
