I know something like this be much better suited to a 3-D program but is it possible to do such a thing accurately in Illustrator?

The image I have in my head is purely using black and white space, to cleverly create the illusion of depth.

Could someone tell me if this is: A.) impossible
B.) Just very difficult
or C.) quite possible

If someone could post a link to a similar image that would be great.

Even better if someone on the forum has built something similar in Illustrator, and can give me some instructions on how to build such a shape.

Thanks again.

C - but long, especially if it's white. If you're not used to building gradients, it will be very annoying. It's easier to use a photo if you want it VERY realistic - waste of time drawing it.. I have do do a lot of tennis balls with text extruded on them - just finished some last week and sent to account for approval.

First search Google Images for "golf ball" to give yourself a working prototype on screen.

Draw a circle. You can try Ill effect - 3D or you can do the 3d fill yourself. To give it roundness you going to have to fill with radial gradient that is very light in the middle and darkens to the outside. You could use inner glow effect, but the gradients give you more options. You need quite a few colors, 3 to 5 to give a good round effect. A gaussian blur also can help.

The dimples are sort of wierd as you have to make then a little off round as they approach the edges to give the wrap effect. Ones towards the top and bottom have to be just a bit oval in the upright direction - a VERY small amount best handled by Transform. The dimples toward each side have to be a little oval sideways. Those approaching upper & lower left and rignt have to be a bit oval in those directions. Direction of these is best handled by Rotate and type in amount.

The fills on the dimples are sort of the reverse of the ball - slighltly darker in middle, radiating out lighter. A slight outer glow or blur on these can help to blend them into the ball.

acevans, I'm a little confused by your link... That site is for finding brand logos, not royalty free clip art. Any particular reason you suggested that for junglist's problem?
