Black and White with Red Rose isolation 2

1. In Image->Image Size, note the pixel dimensions and resolution
1. Select just the rose by using the magic wand or freehand select tool.
2. Copy the rose to the clipboard by pressing Ctrl-C.
3. Create a new picture: File->New using the exact same dimensions and resolution as the old picture
4. Paste the rose into the new picture by pressing Ctrl-V.
5. Back in the old picture, greyscale the picture: Image->Mode->Greyscale
6. Select the whole picture: Select->All then Ctrl-C.
7. Back in the new picture: Ctrl-V to paste the greyscale image.
8. In the Layers panel, reverse the order of the layers so the color rose is on top.
9. Adjust either the rose or the greyscale layer so the color rose is exactly over the greyscale rose.
10. Crop / Flatten the image as desired.

Even easier... select the rose as mkrausnick suggested using your wagic wand, or the quickmask mode if you have a complex image...the quick mask is the little boxes on the palette beneath the color selector.

After you have the rose selected, fo to Select>Inverse (shift + CTRL + I on PC) and then go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate (Shift + CTRL + U). That will make the image grayscale on the selected area and leave the rest color.

There are always at least 3 ways to do everything in Photoshop.

Hmmm. Just as a learning experience for me, I tried the technique you described. After inverting the selection, the DESATURATE option in the IMAGE menu is grayed out. I poked around but couldn't see how to remove the color.

Hmmm.. I did it just now and it worked like a charm. What vs of Photoshop are you using? I am using 7.

I use the quick mask mode and the brush and eraser to select the area I wanted.

Interesting. I'm stuck in V6. As a test, I used the magic and to select an area and then inverted it. Maybe it's a V6 thing. I'm not good enough at PS yet to understand filters and masks so I didn't go there. I'm just a lowly volunteer webmaster trying to jazz up my web sites a little, and give my brain some recreation from my database developer job.

Th equick mask is easy, and indispensible once you start using it... click on the quick mask icon, the dark square with white circle.

Then select your brush and begin painting anywhere you want, it will cause a red overlay wherever you are masking... so do this on the rose.

After you have the entire rose painted, click the white square with white circle to get the marching ants around your selection.

Now invert the selection, and see if that works.

Wow, what a handy tool. Much better at selecting than the magic wand. But after selecting SELECTION->INVERT the IMAGE->ADJUST menu item is still grayed out. But as long as we're learning, progress is being made!

Are you in RGB mode? (Image>Mode) If you are in index color mode, then you will have those options grayed out.

Duhhhh, yup. Changed mode to RGB and now it works as advertised. I have to thank moepower1 for asking the question in the first place. I learned as much as he/she did.
