This is not always the fan, in fact most cases it isn't the fan. What you can do is the following:

1.) Unscrew the bottom memory upgrade 'flap' and remove it. On the board is a small white connector with 2 wires leading to the CMOS battery. Unplug this battery and replace it with either a £14 replacement or simply get a CR2025 battery and tape the contacts in place. This should resolve your problem.

2.) Get a new fan assembly for about £5 and replace it. It takes a while to get to it, you have to dismantle the case, etc, it is up near the screen connector.

3.) Unfortunately if all still fails then you may be looking at getting a new system board.

Is this a 600 Thinkpad specific problem? Do CR2025 batteries on this particular model run out quickly?

I agree with prodigymad. IN MOST CASES IT'S NOT THE FAN! i JUST FIXED A CLIENT'S LAPTOP WITH THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE and it was resolved by replacing the CMOS battery by an ordinary one from a Desktop Mb. Actually any brand should work.

I just had this same issue with my thinkpad.
When I opened the case to replace the battery, I noticed the cooling fan(which is on the undersde of a large silver plate) was covered in a lot of dust. After cleaning the fan my system booted with no problem.
