Word opens but not the document

In Windows explorer go to Tools -> Folder Options and the File types tab.
Scroll down to Microsoft Word Document (DOC)
Click Change (or Edit) depending on your version of Windows (advanced on Windows 2000) and find the properties.
Ensure that the "%1" comes after the executable filename and untick DDE.
