I've got a stand alone version of SQL running on my laptop for development and all of a sudden it won't start. When I try to start the SQL Agent I get a 1069 error that the dependency service or group failed to start. If I try to start SQL server from SQL server manager it doesn't do anything. In services it throws the following error: could not start the MSSQLServer service on local computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal windows error or an internal service error.

I found a tech note in the knowledge base that said to make sure both services are setup to run by the local system account and they are.

Any idea's???

Just a thought, have you tried rebooting the machine, as its on a standalone computer i guess thats ok. It could be the OS. Make sure both services are set to automatic, reboot and see if they start ok

How long was it running on your laptop until it quit working? Is it a trial version?

Hello everyone,

Thank you for your posts. I am running SQL 2000 on a Windows 2000 professional machine. I had installed the eval version on my laptop for development and I assumed that it would let me know it was expired instead of just stopping! I was wrong. I've downloaded a crack for it but haven't tried it yet.

Thanks,
Jeanna

You've "downloaded a crack for it." Do you intend to run the evaluation version illegally? I strongly advise against that. You put yourself and your company at risk for violating the EULA. Have your company buy the Devloper Version or load the desktop or personal edition on the laptop, provising the server editions are properly licensed. If you want to get the best answer for your question read faq183-874 and faq183-3179.
