I have the typical dilemma of a group of programmers blaming the network for their slow application performance. Everything else runs just fine so I believe the problem is withing their custom app/servers. This group of servers is attached to a ProCurve 4000M. Is there an easy way to check utilization of this switch to determine if everything is flowing as it should during their tests or do I need to create a monitor port and use a Sniffer? I need some ideas quick!! Thx!! David@Rocketmail.com

If you just point your web browser at it you will get realtime utilisation stats for each port, could be worth a look initailly before looking at other options...

Cheers,

Russky

Russky's suggestion regarding monitoring port utilization is an excellent idea.

Also, if you are over-driving the switch or your network design to the point where network performance suffers, then it is certain that packets are being dropped somewhere. These drops may be reported as Drops in the switch's statistics, or as CRC errors or late collisions (the rates of these errors go up on half-duplex links that are over-driven) or other types of indicators.

Network performance troubleshooting is a big, complex topic. If the above suggestions do not help, you can find more comprehensive advice in the Tech Note on this topic at
Good luck,
Ralph
