I have installed 2 NICs on my computers using a CAt 5 crossover cable with RJ45 connectors ,while trying to set up a 2 computer LAN. I believe the crossover cable is also OK as are the cards.

The funny thing is despite using both TCP/IP as well as NETBEUI my network is one sided i.e on one day it appears in computer 1 and the next day it shows up on computer 2 .

What shows up is that computer 1 detects comp1 ( itself)as well as comp2 the other computer but on trying to connect with comp2 it shows an error and "cannot connect" message.

The next day it's comp2 which detects comp1 and comp2 but nothing is detected on the other computer.

I just can't figure out whats wrong. ANy help please ?

Thanks.

Try setting one computer to master browser. It's a registry tweak. key location is

Hkey_local_machine\system\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

Look for MaintainServerList

right click, choose Modify and change the value to YES.

it can take up to 15 minutes for the change to take effect.
