What are you guys successful using for SIP softphones on smartphones (specifically iphone) for IP office? (needs to work outside of the internal local network that the IP office resides on.) I have a customer that would like to try some out, I have tried 3CXPhone, Media5-fone, (free in the app store). Has anyone done the counter path Bria softphone? It's 7.99, plus you need to fork out for the G.729 codec. Is it worth it? (Why can't Avaya have their own certified SIP softphone for the Iphone and Ip Office, I see that Avaya's makes one for Aura, wish it worked on ip office though.)

The customer has iphone users that are racking up huge toll costs and they would like to mitigate this by using a sip softphone while the users are on wifi in the hotel and possible over 3G, etc... I'm thinking the simplest way is to put a public IP for the WAN port on the IP office and use a good reliable SIP softphone for iphone, any thoughts?

Stick with Media5-fone with the extra pack (cost) otherwise you cant transfer or hold a call

I cut myself short....

Media5 worked well for us at a customer site (on WLAN) and the extras adds transfer and hold (I recall) and you can buy g711 and their "HD" codec. I use if on my android phone - its the better one out there IMO.

yeah, Ive tried Bria and 3cx but im having issues with one way audio, but when I installed mediafone5, works smoothly

For me Bria works better than media5 and 3cx on my iPhone.

One way audio on Bria is resolved by changing your Network Transversal Strategy to Server managed. Its basically the same as removing direct media path.

Ok, I did the unlock, telephony, and G.729 purchase packs for the mediafone5 app for the iPhone. I'm in the USA on Verizon iPhone 4 and here's what I discovered. (The home office IP500v2 has the WAN port with a public IP address, no firewall, no NAT etc... running GA release 8.1) I can get the mediafone5 working as a SIP endpoint from my home WiFi connection just fine, all of it works using all 3 different codecs G.729, G.711, G.722 (make and receive calls, 2 way audio, all is good!) I did nothing special to my home router programming wise.

Trying to use the 3G connection with mediafone5 is where it gets tricky and I'm not sure what Verizon is doing, but I can make calls just fine, however, I cannot receive them. When I look at my registration in sysmonitor for SIP extension, my registered SIP endpoint for my iPhone is showing up 174.255.7.5, what the hell is 255!!! So on a call initiated from the home office, the IP office tries to connect to my iPhone via sip, sysmonitor shows "internal error" in the sip trace. Somehow Verizon is showing my ip as 174.255.7.5 and that can't be routed to as it's not a valid address.

So to get this working over 3G, I use a VPN app on my iPhone that connects to the office router sonicwall, and then I program mediafone5 to use the internal address of the LAN port on the IP500v2, then it works over 3G just fine. (well really it's 3G via VPN to my office) G.729 codec worked fine. I imagine this method would be a huge battery hog and probably not feasible, but I did it to prove it as a proof of concept, and also that verizon is showing some wacky ip for my iPhone over 3G and the only way around it is VPN. Maybe things will change and the vpn not needed when the iphone5 is out and us iPhone users can finally get 4g and Verizon doesn't try and screw us.

However if you got your iPhone connected up via WiFi, and you wanted to save roaming or toll charges, or had a weak cell signal at a hotel with free WiFi, etc... this mediafone5 app could be worth it to some users. Also the transfer, hold, conference all worked without a hitch on the mediafone5 app.

Sometimes providers do this on purpose to prevent not using there mobile network for calls.

BAZINGA!

I'm not insane, my mother had me tested!

Let it auto create on the IPO and use these settings on the iPhone.

AccountName: ExtnName
DisplayAs: ExtnName
Username: number
password: 0000
Domain: ip addr of the IPO
VM number: *17

Bria is the on sip client the can do a pre-announced transfer, media5 and 3cx can't.
Media5 and 3cx are missing something in their sip stack. You can if you cannot register it then try a different port instead of 5060 (i mostly use 5070) like tlpeter says some providers just don't let you make VoIP call over 3G.
Another thing is on those three sip softphones you cannot block mobile calls while you're calling on one of the sip softphones. They just get thru the call.

Bas1234, doing it your way do I need a VPN app on my iphone? I am looking for a solution over remote WiFi. My prospect travels a ton a wants a smartphone soft phone to make calls over IP (Wifi) from remote countries.

Trying to figure out the easiest way to do this.

Thanks

VPN and WiFi is a must, VPN for not to get Hacked, and Wifi to have a good quality.

On Android phones im using CSipSimple, works as a charm.

On iPhone 3CXPhone is working fine also, but we´ve only used it inside our wlan, planning a site to site VPN test soon.

@RafaelGrande, try to do a assisted transfer on 3CX. Won't work you cannot do a pre announced trasfer. That only works with Bria for what i've seen.
