Where did my system restore points go?

Hi

This morning my internet connection was dead again.
I decided to use system restore to go back to when it was working.

I have created several restore points as I installed software in 7 and it has created a couple automatically as well.

When I went there it suggested that I restore to before I installed I-Tunes last night.

I did this and it did not solve the problem so I decided I would go back further.

When I opened System restore it said that no restore points have been created, even though I could see a list yesterday that had 5 or 6.

Where did they go?
System Restore isn't very helpful if it doesn't retain your restore points.

I did finally get my internet working by going into device manager and telling it to update the driver. It said that the driver was already up to date but it did connect when I did that. The internet connection thing seems to be a recurring problem that a lot of people are having. No one seems to have found one answer that will solve it.

Mike, in a dual boot system, the other OS wiped those restore points...

No restore points are available when you use Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 in a dual-boot configuration together with an earlier Windows operating system

I guess the patch did not work then, about the loss of internet connection...

have you updated the drivers at all?

Hi

I have the latest nVidia drivers for the network card.

I see that the problem is logging into XP as far as the recovery points were concerned.

As long as I wasn't using XP the recovery points were there but I logged into XP to see if the internet connection was working and that wiped the stored files.

The problem with the internet connection seems to have something to do with installing software.

It worked fine for several days after the download but then I installed Adobe Illustrator and it quit. I used System Restore to go back before the install and it started working again. I didn't reinstall it since I don't use it a lot and can always boot to XP when I need it.

The connection worked fine until last night when I installed I-Tunes and it quit again.

I went back to before the installation, now it's working once more.

It is't installing everything that does it, maybe only things with an internet component like I-Tunes and Adobe auto update services.

I suppose that they will figure out what's happing eventually. I have seen posts from other people saying that installing Adobe products killed their connection in Windows 7.

I can only confirm that Adobe Reader (Vista version) works without a problem, I got version 9.1.0 installed on both my desktop and laptop...

iTunes, yuk, that piece of mangledware will never be installed on any of my computers... and I can believe that it will mess with the internet abilities of any installed OS, as it has in the past...

Hi Ben

I haven't had problems with all Adobe software, I have Acrobat 9, Indesign CS2, Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Premiere all installed ok. They all run fine in Windows 7.

When I installed Illustrator my connection quit.

I wish I could get a handle on this, I'm kind of compulsive about these things.

As long as I don't turn my computer off it keeps working once I get it to connect. But the fact that it will connect makes me want to know why it won't just do it on it's own.
It's like it just needs a kick in the butt to get it going.

I just downloaded the 64 bit version of Windows 7.
I'm going to get a new computer soon and I will install the 64 bit version on that when I get it.

Problem is that I don't have Illustrator to test, too expensive for my taste and needs, so I don't know what it is that is killing the connection...

I can only surmise that it installs something in the Winsocks, that is not compatible with W7 way of doing things...

You could try to install Illustrator, then once finished, open up a CMD window, and type the following command:

netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot...

this will reset the winsocks to the default values...

Hi Ben

Thanks for the suggestion but I have given up for now.
See my final post in the other post.

As I said there I have found a temporary fix, that isn't really a fix but it does get me connected.

I think that there is something wrong with Windows 7 and nVidia controllers that will have to be addressed by Microsoft.

Thanks again...

Mike

either that or nVidia has to stop producing NIC chips with build in firewalls... is my opinion...

then on both my W7 installs, are different chipsets, desktop has Atheros and the Laptop has RealTek (cable) and Intel (wireless), and am not experiencing any drop out or network problems...
