I'd suggest the 'polar grid' tool in Illustrator; is in the fly-out menu with the line tool, under the pen tool.

How would you make each segment its own mathematically correct object - IE each segment follows the curve of the circle? Every time I make a pie chart and break it apart i end up with a circle and single vertical lines emanating from the centre.

The follow on question is how do you create duplicate objects around a central rotation point in Illustrator?

...the pie chart tool, at least in CS3 and CS3, does create individual segments (you need to ungroup it first)...

...the polar grid tool does not create individual segments, so you would have to construct those manually...

...to create duplicate objects around a central point you need to rotate tool with the copy function. When you have done one copy, pressing apple/command + D will then created another copy from the last, using the initial rotation values used, and so on until you end up back at the beginning...

...apple/command + D is also useful for other step and repeat tasks...

..and to also clarify that this thread is referring to illustrator work...

...in photoshop, command+shift+alt/option+T is used for step and repeat...
