Why is text always underlined ? 2

The answer to the second question is that if you don't own the bold or italic variant of the font, it won't be available. It's not like Word, where you can fake bold or italics. As to the underlining - no idea.

I've just read in the help files that there is a "faux" option that will imitate the bold / italic variant, but can't figure how to implement it..... yet !

...faux styles can be found under the flyout menu of the character palette. with the underline issue, launch photoshop go to window > character, in the flyout menu make sure that underline is unticked, sounds to me this is currently defaulting, once unticked quit photoshop and relaunch to make sure is has stuck, then in theory all type will not be underlined...

...when dealing with type in photoshop make suer the anti-aliasing method is set to a method other than none, otherwise type will be jaggy when rasterized, this option however doesn't effect type when exported to pdf or vector eps as it is rendered using the outline of the type...

Nice one Andrew. That's sorted it.

The font I've been trying to use is Vavaldi. Seems that it is italic by default and CAN'T be changed other than with the "faux" method.

All of my text is underlined in CS2 while I'm working with it. As soon as I switch to another tool, thereby exiting text edit mode, the underline disappears. It's simply showing you what all the text in that layer is.
