ZOOM Modem Problem

I recently did a full upgrade from Windows ME to XP Professional. I reformatted first just in case. As expected some of the devoces didn't work but I was able to get updated drivers for them, sound card and video card.

The modem refused to work. XP couldn't see it. I went to my local computer shop - PC World - who advised I should buy a new XP compatible modem - which I did. I purchased a Zoom V.92 56K-PCI modem which stated on the packaging that it was XP compliant. The quick start doco which came with the Modem stated not to worry on install if the XP Window popped up saying more or less to install at your own risk.

I installed it and now have a working modem, albeit intermittant. It won't hold a connection for more than about five minutes, then drops. I had no connection issues at all under Windows ME - I suspect my phone line is O.K.

I've dropped the speed of the modem and changed the buffer sizes - all to no avail.

Is this familiar to anyone? Is it an XP issue or a dud modem or both? Can anyone help please, it's driving me nuts.

Update... I took the modem back to the shop who stated it was XP compatible. They said maybe it was a dud modem and gave me an exchange. I took it home and installed it and have exactly the same problem.

I'm starting to think it's an XP issue. My PC is just over one year old, a 1GHz AMD processor with 256Mb of ram.

Has anyone had a similar experience with XP?

TIA
Greg

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem, with the same modem under windows xp.
Zoom v.92 modem drops after 5 mn of connection. In a funny manner, the modem doesn't disconnect anymore if you keep trying, ...after 6 or 7th disconnections!!
No idea what is the problem, but I would be happy to know!!!

I have the same problem! I removed the zoom drivers and net waiting. and installed the modem using the windows "generic 56 hcf data fax modem" driver which can be found in the "chose from list" option. The modem work's with out any problems on this setting. DO NOT use the acer driver XP crashes and shut's down everything! Also I tried
the zoom drivers on an ISP that supports v92, still fell
out after 5 min's.

Thanxs Notlad!
The generic 56 hcf data fax modem driver works great for me too!
By the way, the updated XP driver on the Zoom website fell out for me...funny, there was 'XP compatible' written on the box of this modem ;)) In fact, that's why I have bought this particular one.
