I have a small peer-to-peer network running Win2K and XP with the Win2k machine acting as my gateway because it is connected to the internet. Anyway i have the free version of zonealarm running on my win2k machine. My XP machine cannot access the internet because zonealarm keeps blocking access. I have played around with advanced settings in zonealarm by putting in my ip range and adding computers, but it still will not let me access the internet. If I shut down zonealarm, everything works fine, but i am not going to be connected to the internet without a firewall. I also have Norton Firewall but have not installed it yet. If anyone knows how to set this up in zonealarm, please let me know because i not sure how good Norton is.

How do you have your system configured to let the Windows 2000 host act as a gateway? What you trying to do is have the Windows 2000 box act as a NAT like Winproxy. Zone Alarm may not like this but I'd have to know the specifics of your config before making an intelligent comment.

BTW, how are you connected to the Internet? Dial up? Cable/DSL? IMHO, you are better off coughing up ~$120 and getting a broadband router if you have broadband. Most have at least 4 ports and act as a firewall to boot. I run Zonealarm as an added safety measure (mostly to discover trojans that are trying to make outbound connections). It isn't really necessary if you have a router.

As I understand it, ZoneAlarm is for a single machine. If you're going to use it as a NAT gateway, then you'll need ZoneAlarm Pro which isn't free.

My guess is that you are using Windows ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). ZoneAlarm will not work with that. I found that on their website. You need to purchase the pro version to do that. Mike Wills

I have the Pro version but for some reason I keep getting a true vector error when it tries to load. So, I downloaded the free version hoping it would work, but i ended up using Norton Personal Firewall. If anyone knows how to fix the ZoneAlarm Pro problem, please let me know.
Thanks

Is it a recent version of ZAP? Older versions wouldn't work with W2000

Have you got it loading at startup?

I had this problem when loading zonealarm by clicking on the icon but when running as a windows service it works great..

Seems to happen to me when I try to load zonealarm and another program has established a connecting to the internet.

Try disabling all other start up items and only have zonealarm running at startup. See if that works..

Hope this helps.. Wullie

I think I had the same problem. When both NICs were disabled (wireless and CAT-5) it loaded fine. If there was no network, it loaded fine, otherwise it wouldn't. Mike Wills
