Hopefully, I can track someone down who can help me on this. Disconnecting with the above modem and reconnecting is a no go when using ZoneAlarm. Also, on shutting down, to get things to shut down you have to disconnect and then shut down ZoneAlarm. I can use Windows XP's firewall only with no problems, but I'd rather not use it and prefer ZoneAlarm. However, having the above problems, I hope to find a fix so that I can reconnect or shut down the system without shutting down the firewall.

hmmm that's weird, I use zoneAlarm with DSL connection, how come I've never run into that problem at all? Sorry I couldn't help, just curious.

Do you have the internal SpeedStream 3060 DSL modem too?

seanpmi,

I had exactly the same problem under Windows 2000 once i upgraded from a 56Kb dial-up to ADSL using and internal PCI dynalink ADSL modem.

Zonealarm would stop Win2k shutting down and I also had to restart if I wanted to reconnect after disconnecting (ie changing logged in users).

Zonealarm support said that it was a known problem and I would just have to shut down Zonealarm before trying to log out and shutdown. This sometimes worked and sometimes didn't and wasn't an acceptable fix for me anyway.

I went and bought Norton's Personal Firewall product (after downloading the trial to see if it would work). Everything worked fine with that (shut downs, reconnects etc) - and it's a lot better than the built-in MS security.

Keep in mind you'll need to 2002 version of any Norton product for it to be XP compatible.

I have an xp with zone alarm and adsl shared over a lan. Zone Alarm racks up alerts faster than you can clear them off.other machines, sharing the same connection get about ten alarms/day. is this typical for ZA running on xp? can I trust the firewall that comes with XP? running the firewall leads to additional networking problems too. is there a way to restore original xp settings and start from scratch without wiping the hd clean? I can't afford the time to backup and reinstall everything. today i can't see anything on the network or even get online with the xp.

Since i've installed Zone Alarm, i'm experiencing the same problems as you, but i use no cable modem, just an ISDN Modem.

So i suppose the problem is related only to Zone Alarm and not to the OS nor to the Hardware.

Zistan - I would concur - that's exactly what it seems like to me. A pity because ZoneAlarm is such an excellent product (and free to boot!)

What the heck? hmm why do I have no problem with zonealarm at all? Am I lucky or are you guys just unlucky? I mean if it's a common issue with Zonealarm, I should get it too. But I don't. hmmm, could it be becasue I installed it in win98 and then upgraded it to XP? so I didn't actually install it in XP? No idea

lxn,

You are right lxn - that is strange. What kind of ADSL hardware to you have? So far, it seems to be related to having an internal PCI ADSL modem - can you confirm that is/is not what you have?

Not sure that it's just an XP problem as I had the problem with Win2k. I haven't tried ZoneAlarm in XP as I'd already bought another product by then to fix the Win2k issue.

Sorry, I've been on a trip.
Um yeah, I guess it's not a problem with XP then. I do have a SpeedStream, but external. So I guess it's probably a problem with ZoneAlarm and the Internal SpeedStream modem. Geez, that is bad.
