On my other PC, a Compaq Pentium II ATX 450 Mhz Deskpro, I installed a link to a Verizon DSL Modem (static IP) and a SMC 7004ABR 4 port 10/100 Broadband DSL Router with Printer. Prior to installing the SMC software, I uninstalled ZoneAlarm 3.7.143. While the ZoneAlarm uninstall told me that I had uninstalled the program, MSIE 5.5, when launched, pops up with a ZoneAlarm page: the title of the page is Zone Labs: VSMON – Lockup Server – Microsoft Internet Explorer. Notice from Zone Labs Internet Security. The page says, in part:
This page is to notify you that ZoneAlarm has detected a problem with your installation, and therefore has restricted Internet access from your machine for your protection. Don’t panic! The step-by-step instructions listed here will help you to determine the problem, and explain how to resolve the issue.
Why did this happen?
An error occurred during the ZoneAlarm installation. Because this condition is similar to a condition where a hacker is trying to disable your security, ZoneAlarm (Plus/Pro) has blocked would-be hackers by locking down your computer from outside Internet attacks. You should verify that your system is clean of any viruses or Trojans before restoring Internet Access. Check with your antivirus support site for help and special tools to remove viruses.

A scan with NAV 2001 (last update 4/2/03) revealed no viruses. I am unable to do any Live Updates at this time.
I used RegClean 4.3 Build 780 to purge any software registry entries. Still unable to go online.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
David

Try this,

Disconnect from the Net, Uninstall ZAP, Reinstall, and then reconnect

Installed a special version of ZoneAlarm (3.7.159) through a special link on the web page provided by Zone Labs, and unchecked "load ZoneAlarm at start-up". Rebooted, then uninstalled ZoneAlarm. All works fine.

Thanks,
David
